decisions, decisions

Jokes about hookers aside... I'm on the fence as to how to spend my stimulus money. It's definitely getting spent, our bills are current and although gas/food prices suck, we're not in the poor house...

As Uncle Sam taught me: Shoot. Move. Communicate (in that order).

Do you already have an adequate handgun?
Is it a private sale?

Defensive weaponry comes first if you aren't suitably equipped, especially if something becomes available via private sale.

Assuming you have a good handgun (and a backup piece) already, go for the police scanner, although if it is a private sale you can't go wrong having an extra piece you can cache.

I have a decent, although low capacity handgun: a Kahr K40 (.40 S&W is my round of choice. Period.) My current BUG is a Walther P22, if that even qualifies as a BUG =)

On the other hand, I already have a PRO84 which covers 60-70% of the agencies in my immediate vicinity, but not Cleveland proper nor the State Highway Patrol.

I could go an entirely different direction: get my ham ticket and some starter radio gear.

I'm really on the fence.

Why not a rifle? I know you said you want one. You have a great pistol, an in a real pinch pistol already.

Find a gun show and you can get a sweet f2f rifle for 600 bucks. Whether you go with a Saiga .308, a WASR AK, or something like a mini-14 (which shoots both .223 and 5.56 NATO flawlessly and with no ill effects) ... you can score a sweet rifle, a few mags and a few hundred cartridges for 600 bucks. ;)

Direct deposit came today... and I think I settled on my decision.

Inexpensive rifle in 5.56 NATO or 7.62 NATO, and hopefully have enough left over for my ham ticket and some basic gear. A rifle is definitely a necessity, but I also feel ham is critical for emergency comms and info gathering.

The cheapest, and best way to get into a .308/NATO 7.62 is that Saiga .308. It's an AK style weapon, but fires the NATO round. The old disadvantage was an 8 round mag, but 20 round mags are out, though they are like 30-45 bucks depending on where you find em.

Still, this is the time. The .308 weapons are drying up in general, and the Saiga itself is on hold for imports for the time being. Still out there of course, but the price will climb soon, and they will be $800 dollar weapons by the middle of next year I would think. However, one place has them ... I want to get one this summer. I did a ton of research and settled on this gun, with the 16" barrel.

AoA has them in stock still. I am prowling the gun shows myself looking for an f2f though, even if it may take longer. You may want to go that route if having no paper trail is a concern, and frankly, it should be.

Saiga .308 Win on it's way. They are out of stock EVERYWHERE... I had to pay $10 over MSRP, but will be in my hands by end of week.

AoA is out of stock on 308's, BTW.

No more 308's coming in factory fresh for the conceivable future, to any distributor. You'll have to find a f2f or luck out on an auction.

Got mine with the 16" barrel and polymer furniture. Really wanted the skeleton stock, but like I said, pickings are slim. The RAA skeleton stock is under $90 and goes on with no mods to the gun, so that might be a future purchase. Gotta stock up on mags first.
